Product Description

The Mars 888 Traffic Breaker is one of the few warning beacons people recognize on sight. TriLite still builds it, now with an LED light source, in a highly polished corrosion-resistant stainless steel housing for fire trucks and emergency vehicles.
This is the pedestal mount version, the TB8, running on 12-24 VDC. Two lens and light combinations sit on TriLite's current table: clear lens with white LED and red lens with red LED. Supply Owl's assortment adds a clear lens with red LED.
The unit measures 8.75 inches high by 10.75 inches in diameter and 11 inches long, and it is field repairable, which is the reason so many of these are still in service decades after installation.

What is the TriLite Mars 888 Traffic Breaker?

The Mars 888 is an oscillating warning beacon built for emergency vehicles and fire apparatus. Rather than rotating a reflector at a steady speed, the lamp assembly oscillates, which produces the moving output TriLite calls the Traffic Breaker pattern. The housing is highly polished corrosion-resistant stainless steel, and the design is field repairable, so a unit on a truck can be serviced rather than scrapped.

What makes the Mars 888 warning pattern different?

TriLite literature describes the output as a triple eight pattern, created by the oscillating lamp assembly tracing a figure-eight path. A rotating beacon sweeps a beam in one direction at a constant rate, and the eye adjusts to it. An oscillating pattern reverses, which is harder to tune out. That is the whole argument for the Mars 888, and it is why drivers approaching a fire scene recognize it before they read anything else.

Which TB8 lens and light configuration do you need?

Three are listed in this assortment. TB8-L1-P/C pairs a clear lens with a white LED, which gives the highest raw output. TB8-L1-P/R pairs a red lens with a red LED, the classic fire apparatus look. The third, TB8-L1-P/RC, puts a red LED behind a clear lens. That last one is in the Supply Owl source sheet but not on TriLite's current pedestal table, so confirm availability before you promise a delivery date on it.

Does the TB8 run on 12 or 24 volts?

Both. TriLite lists the LED pedestal models for 12-24 VDC, so one unit covers apparatus on either supply. For a fleet running a mix of older 12 volt trucks and newer 24 volt builds, that removes a sourcing headache. Check the apparatus wiring rather than assuming from the vehicle year, and confirm the circuit can carry the beacon alongside whatever else is on that feed.

LED or legacy halogen Mars 888: what actually changed?

The pattern and the housing stayed. The light source did not. TriLite's information sheet puts the LED models at roughly three times brighter than the halogen versions, with an 850 lumen LED and an average life near 50,000 hours against about 300 hours for the halogen lamp. On an apparatus that runs its warning lights at every call, that is the difference between a lamp you change regularly and one you largely forget about.

Can you convert an older Mars 888 to LED?

Yes, on specified models. TriLite offers the LED888CK conversion kit for 12-24 VDC Mars 888 units, which lets a department keep the housing already mounted on the apparatus and upgrade only the light source. Replacement bulbs are also available for units staying as they are: TRI-1600001 in red and TRI-1600000 in clear, both with a clear lens. Confirm the model on the truck before ordering a kit.

Where is the Mars 888 TB8 used?

Fire apparatus first, which is what TriLite designs it for, along with other emergency vehicles. The stainless steel housing holds up to weather and washdowns, and the pedestal mount puts the beacon high enough to clear equipment on the roofline. Departments also buy it as a direct replacement when an older Mars 888 finally fails, because the mounting and the recognizable pattern both carry over.

Customer Testimonials

Life-changing for my daughter with asthma. We installed these in her bedroom and playroom, and her nighttime coughing has decreased dramatically. The pediatrician even noticed improvement in her breathing. We now replace filters monthly religiously – it is the best $20/month we spend for her health.

– Jennifer M., Portland, OR (Mother of 8-year-old with asthma)

I cannot believe the difference in dust accumulation. We used to dust furniture near vents twice a week – now maybe once a month. And my seasonal allergies are noticeably better when I am at home. The filter replacement is super easy, takes 30 seconds. Wish I had found these years ago.

– Robert T., Atlanta, GA (Allergy sufferer)

We have two cats and my husband is allergic. These filters in the bedroom have been a marriage-saver! He can actually breathe at night now. We still have the cats (obviously), but the constant sneezing and congestion is gone. The filters definitely catch pet hair – you can see it when you replace them monthly.

– Sandra K., Chicago, IL (Pet owner)

As a property manager, tenants with allergies always complained about air quality. These covers have been perfect – affordable enough to install in multiple units, and the health benefit keeps tenants happy and renewing leases. I stock replacement filters and sell them at cost. Total game-changer for tenant satisfaction.

– Patricia L., Denver, CO (Property Manager, 40 units)

My son has severe dust mite allergies. His allergist recommended covering vents in his bedroom. These filter covers have made such a difference – his morning congestion is almost gone. The investment in monthly filters is nothing compared to what we used to spend on allergy medications.

– Michael S., Phoenix, AZ (Father of child with dust mite allergy)
